The municipality of Josipdol (3,987 inhabitants in 2001, 993 in the village of Josipdol) is located some 40 km south-west of Karlovac, south of the town of Ogulin.
The ancient town of Modruš, nowadays in ruins, is located in the municipality. Modruš provided the name of the 1886-1918 westernmost Croatian County of Modruš-Rijeka. The medieval rulers of Modruš were the Frankopan family, one of the most important Croatian feudal families, Princes of Krk and Modruš.

The symbols of Josipdol are prescribed in Articles 8 to 10 of the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Josipdol, adopted on 14 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 29 July 2009 in the County official gazette Glasnik Karlovačke županije, No. 26. This is repeated in Article 7 of the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Josipdol, adopted on 28 MArch 2013 and published on 8 April 2013 in the County official gazette Glasnik Karlovačke županije, No. 16 (text).
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is described in Article 7 of the Municipality Statutes as "in proportions 1:2, red with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle".

Coat of arms of Josipdol - Image by Željko Heimer, 15 June 2013
The coat of arms is described in Article 7 of the Municipality Statutes as follows:
The coat of arms of the Municipality is in a silver/white semi-circular shield a bucket helmet with a golden/yellow red mantle and golden/yellow red torse from which is issuing a red golden/yellow divided eagle wing, above in the red a golden/yellow six-pointed star.
These are the helmet and the crest of the Frankopan family, whose coat of arms is "Per fess gules and or in the first a mullet of the second". Such an helmet and crest are usually set above the shield, that would contain the main heraldic emblems, and the use of the helmet as a charge in the shield itself is very unusual.

Table flag of Josipdol - Image by Željko Heimer, 15 June 2013
A promotion leaflet of Heraldic Art shows the table flag, obviously based on the ceremonial flag, but not entirely the same: red vertical flag ending triangularly, with the coat of arms, the name of the municipality and two linden branches below. While the inscription in the ceremonial flag is made on two arches, on the table flag the word "JOSIPDOL" is inscribed on an horizontal straight line.
